“’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” Jeremiah 29:11
My life changed in late 2017 when I said “yes” to God’s plan for the next season of my life. I had zero aspirations to be an artist or author, but God had a plan. With only five months of painting experience, He called me to develop a website and write Christian devotionals to pair with my abstract paintings. I suspected that God must have a great sense of humor because eighteen months later, He came calling again. This time He said, “Let’s get a book, Becoming His Masterpiece, published.” I said yes to God’s calls (not always my first response!) despite what I felt was an overwhelming lack of qualifications and an abundance of obstacles.
- I had my first art class in November of 2017 at the age of 67.
- I had no clue how to create a website.
- “Biblical scholar” had never been used in the same sentence with my name.
- I am a notoriously slow learner of all things spiritual.
- My devotional writing was limited to a few mini devotionals for small groups.
- Publishers are not interested in novice writers without a huge social media following.
Over the last few years I have learned that when you say yes to God’s call, He is faithful to provide. He provided me with a steady supply of ideas for paintings and devotionals as well as a publisher who was willing to chance on an unknown. It is because of God’s providence and power that Becoming His Masterpiece was published in November 2020. In reality, God is the true author and artist, I’m just along for the ride.
