One of the scriptures in the February 24th devotional in Jesus Always by Sarah Young, caught my attention.

“The Lord God has given me his words of wisdom so that I may know what I should say to all these weary ones. Morning by morning he wakens me and opens my understanding to his will.” Isaiah 50:4 (TLB)

This verse reminded me of my critical need to seek God each and every day.  Isaiah must have been better at it than me.  Although I know it is by his plan that I wake up each morning, I don’t always start my day thinking about him and seeking his will. It is a choice that I must make daily.

In Luke 9:23, Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”  The truth is that being a disciple of Christ is a daily process that requires strength and perseverance.  In order to be effective disciples, we need spiritual nutrition each day and that comes only from Christ.  Jesus laid out this truth in John 15:5-8:

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.”

In our busy, cluttered and noisy world, Satan often has no trouble convincing me that all kinds of secular things will fill me up and nourish my soul.  If I forget to eat all day long (highly unlikely for me!) is not good for my body.  If I am not connected to Christ each day, my soul suffers from malnutrition and I lack the wisdom and strength to resist the lies of Satan.

When I was working on this painting, I was thinking of the beautiful results of seeking our Lord daily.  I wanted to portray a repeated pattern that revealed bits of color and beauty. It is easy to think of our daily quiet time as somewhat routine and repetitive, but if our hearts truly seek his spiritual bounty, he is faithful to pour his transforming power and wisdom into our souls.

The Bible repeatedly assures us that it is worth our time to devote time daily to seeking our Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer. Here is a small sample:

  • “In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly” (Psalm 5:3).
  • “Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. Our God is a God who saves; from the Sovereign Lord comes escape from death” (Psalm 68:19-20).
  • “Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life” (Psalm 143:8).
  • Isaiah 50:4 (above).

Questions for Reflection:

  • What do these verses reveal about the benefits you will realize by daily seeking God?
  • It is easy to skip your devotional time or let it become routine and rote. Do you need to make any adjustments to your daily time with your Creator?
  • Ask God to guide you and give you a hunger and thirst for daily nourishment for your soul.

God bless each of us as we commit to letting him nourish our souls each day!
